O'Grady is a native of Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of Jan and Jim O'Grady, a financial planner. She grew up in Wheaton and was a student at Wheaton North School. She was a graduate in 1981. Her appearances in commercials prior to making the move to Los Angeles in 1986. The first time she worked, O'Grady was model for Montgomery Ward model, where she also made several commercials. She made her debut on screen in 1988 with the romantic comedy she's Having a Baby. She was later cast in a recurring role in ABC Drama China Beach opposite Dana Delany. In addition, she guest-starred on several other shows, and appeared in made for television and independent movies. Her first big role was as Donna Abandando on the ABC police show NYPD Blue. O'Grady was the long-haired, secretariat character between 1993 and 1996, was awarded Emmy Award nominees each year for Outstanding Drama Series Supporting actor. The ensemble and O'Grady were awarded the Screen Actors Guild Award of Outstanding Performance in the Drama Series Ensemble in 1995.
