O'Neil was a student in high school when she auditioned in 2005 to be a part of the third Canadian Idol season. She made it to the 100th round due to the fact that judges were awed at her singing performances. O'Neil received praise of high quality from the judges, however she was a victim of significant loss in the Top 10 as well as the Top 9 weeks of the finals after she was placed in the bottom three spots and bottom two as well as the bottom two. Judges were amazed by her performance and suggested viewers choose contestants who sang well like Melissa. In spite of consistently impressive performances throughout the contest, O'Neil never again finished among the bottom three. The judge Werner said, following two other breathtaking performances, that O'Neil would be the winner from this year's Canadian Idol competition, as well as the first woman and youngest in show history after the 7th September, 2005 finals. O'Neil was immediately contacted from Canadian prime minister Paul Martin to congratulate her for winning Canadian Idol.
